Thyroid Cancer Incidence in the Patients with Thyroid Development Disorders. A Report of Thirty Years of Single Centre`s Experience

Introduction: Thyroid development disorders are rather rare observed. The most typical are: agenesis or hemiagenesis of the thyroid gland, ectopic thyroid tissue, accessory thyroid masses, thyroglossal duct remnants, bifid thyroid gland, double pyramidal lobe of the thyroid gland. Material and Methods: In the retrospective study we have reviewed the cases of the patients with disorders of the thyroid gland development among 24841 patients operated due to thyroid diseases in our Clinic in years 1974-2003. Results: We have found 8 patients with hemiagenesis, 4 with the thyroglossal duct cysts, 6 with accessory thyroid masses, 1 patient with lack of the isthmus and 1 with double pyramidal lobe. Among these patients, 2 with hemiagenesis and 2 patients with thyroglossal duct cysts had recognized thyroid cancer. Conclusions: We conclude the patients with hemiagenesis or thyroglossal duct cysts have increased risk of thyroid cancer`s incidence. (Clin. Exp. Med. Lett. 2005; 46(4):21-24)
