Attitudes toward organ transplantation among the Polish university students

Introduction: Organ transplantation is a modern method of treatment that, in order to develop, requires understanding and wide acceptance of both the medical community, and the society as a whole. University students, being the future intellectual elites, can and should contribute to the propagation of this method of treatment. Material and methods: The aim of this paper, was to determine the attitude of the students from two of Łódż universities: the University of Lodz and the Medical University, towards organ transplantation. In the questionnaire, the questions formed by the Public Opinion Research Center in the year 2003 were used, and 601 students from both universities were asked for answers. Results: The percentage of those who definitely approve of organ transplantation in creases with duration of studies from 52% to 79% among the students of humanist faculties. Among students of Medical University this percentage increases from 81% to 100%. The term "assumed consent" is properly interpreted by 11% of first year students of University of Lodz and 50% of last year students. Among Medical University students this results rise from 35% to 80% respectively. Conclusions: The results indicate, than a wareness of problems concerning organ transplantation is high among the students and it increases with each year of study. It is slightly higher among the students of the Medical University. (Clin. Exp. Med. Lett. 2006; 47(3):175-178)
