The function of the neutrophils in patients with the acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis

Introduction: The aim of the study was to point out the neutrophils dysfunction in patients suffer from the acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis and the influence of that processes on the therapy. In the patients suffered from the acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis the blood cell count, leucocytes and granulocytes count, the production of the anionic superoxide radical by the resting as well as activated by opsonized zymosane granulocytes were performed. The blood analyses performed before treatment, after 10 and 30 days of the treatment and compared to the control group. Material and methods: The examinations were conducted in 45 patients divided into two groups. The group I consisted of 25 healthy individuals. The group II consisted of 20 patients suffered from the acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, they underwent topical and systemic pharmacotherapy. In every cases the leucocytes count, the neutrophils count, myeloperoxidase activity and the production of the anionic superoxide radical by the resting as well as activated by opsonized zymosane granulocytes was measured. Results: We obtained the higher leucocytes and neutrophils count, the lowered myeloperoxidase activity and the higher production of the superoxide radical during therapy. Conclusions: The applied treatment improves the general condition of the patients suffered from the acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis. We partially obtained the normalization of the oxygen metabolism parameters, disturbed during the acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis. (Clin Exp Med Lett 2008; 49(1): 27-35)
