Colon carcinogenesis is a multi-step process and the sequence of changes: normal mucosa – colon adenoma – carcinoma is well documented. Although genetic alterations are essential for the process, environmental factors such as macro – and micronutrients, tobacco, alcohol and physical activity and their potential influence on colorectal cancer development are widely discussed. However the underlying mechanisms are not always clear, the results of the epidemiological and casecontrol studies indicate definitely that the change of lifestyle, avoiding obesity, increased physical activity, change of eating habits in favour of vegetables and fruits, decreased consumption of red meat in favour of multiunsaturated fatty acids may significantly influence the reduction of the risk of colorectal cancer.
