The function of the oxidative stress enzymes in patients with the periodontal diseases

Introduction: The aim of the study was evaluate to point out the oxidative stress enzymes activity in patients suffer from the acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis and the rapidly progressive periodontitis and the influence of that processes on the therapy. In the patients suffered from the acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis and the rapidly progressive periodontitis activity of the super oxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase were performed. The blood analyses performed before treatment, after 10 and 30 days of the treatment and compared to the control group. Material and methods: The examinations were conducted in 69 patients divided into three groups. The group I consisted of 25 healthy individuals. The group II consisted of 20 patients suffered from the acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis. The group III consisted of 24 patients suffered from the rapidly progressive periodontitis. The patients from group II and III underwent topical and systemic pharmacotherapy. In every cases the activity of the oxidative stress enzymes: super oxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase were measured before and after pharmacotherapy. Results: We obtained the increase level of the oxidative stress enzymes activity in patient with the acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis as well as with the rapidly progressive periodontitis during therapy. Conclusions: The applied treatment increases the activity level of the super oxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase enzymes, in the patients suffered from the acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis and the rapidly progressive periodontitis.
