Introduction: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic gastrointestinal tract disfunction characterized by abdominal pain (or discomfort) and alteration in bowel movements. The etiology of presented symptoms despite numerous studies is unclear. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is one of potential factors causing symptoms of some gastrointestinal functional disorders. The aim of the study was to check whether SIBO is significantly more frequent among patients with IBS than in generally population or not. Material and methods: Study group was composed of 44 adult patients of both sexes, with IBS diagnosed. Control group comprised 28 health people. Breath hydrogen test with lactulose was used as diagnostic tool. Increase of hydrogen concentration in expired air of 12 or more ppm during 30 minutes after 10g of lactulose administration was considered as the positive result. Fisher exact test was used for statistical evaluation. Results: Positive test result was confirmed in case of 6 from 21 (28,6%) IBS diarrhea predominant patients (p=0,01) and 1 in case of mixed type. There were no positive test results in the control group. Conclusion: Presented studies confirmed potential association between diarrhea predominant irritable bowel syndrome and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. (Clin Exp Med Lett 2009; 50(3):197-198)
