Effective treatment for snoring: A pilot study

Background:    Snoring may be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea and a risk factor for atherosclerosis. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of a mandibular repositioning appliance (MRA) for the treatment of snoring, using polysomnography (PSG) to compare data before and after 6 months of MRA usage.
    Material/Methods:    Six consecutive patients (1 woman and 5 men) who reported intense snoring underwent the initial PSG recordings, followed by treatment with an MRA. The inclusion criteria were 8 to 10 teeth in each arch, a healthy periodontium, maximal mandibular protrusion of at least 7 mm, and maximal mandibular opening of 40 mm. The paired t test was used to analyze the effects of the device on respiratory variables. All analyses were performed using SPSS 16.0, with p < 0.05 considered significant.
    Results:    The patients’ partners reported the absence of snoring with the use of the MRA. Only 1 patient complained of jaw discomfort in the first month of treatment.
    Conclusions:    Comparing baseline and post-treatment PSG respiratory variables, the use of MRA proved highly effective for the treatment of snoring.
