Background:    Trigeminal neuralgia is the best known form of facial neuralgia.
Case Report:    This paper reports the case of a 58-year-old woman who sought dental treatment at a stomatology clinic, with a diagnosis of trigeminal neuralgia, as confirmed by the patient history and physical exam. Pain intensity was categorized as 9 on the visual analog scale ranging from 0 to 10. Treatment consisted of 20 sessions of low-level laser irradiation with 4 J/cm2. The daily dose of 1200 mg of carbamazepine prescribed by the neurologist was maintained, and the patient was encouraged to seek psychological care. After 60 days, the patient reported that the pain had diminished to 2 on the pain scale, which remained at this intensity even after the completion of treatment.
Conclusions:    In the present case, the combination of low-level laser therapy, carbamazepine and psychoanalysis was effective in relieving pain and improving the patient’s quality of life.
