Sleep abnormalities in post-polio syndrome affect quality of life

Background: Patients with motor impairment in the lower limbs stemming from poliomyelitis commonly experience sleep disorders, which can affect activities of daily living and have a negative impact on quality of life.
Material/Methods: An analytical of the cross-sectional study was carried out involving 19 volunteers was analyzed using polysomnography.
Results: Diminished sleep efficiency was attributed to periodic movements of the lower limbs as well as episodes of apnea and hypopnea, which increased the number of micro-awakenings and awakenings.
Conclusions: The reduction in REM sleep, which is the period of neurophysiological recovery, has a negative effect on daily living.
