Metabolic syndrome, also known as Raven’s syndrome, syndrome X, and MetS, is a serious health problem in developing and developed countries. Its concept is related to the constellation of metabolic abnormalities associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Although we know much about the risk factors of metabolic syndrome, the pathogenesis of this disease is still not fully understood. Consequently, researchers agree that in addition to environmental factors, genes play an important role in the development of this disorder. The response to environmental factors is modulated by a functional genetic mechanism. Impairment of this mechanism may lead to the appearance of metabolic syndrome.
In this review we present some genes and their polymorphisms which, according to the latest knowledge, may be implicated in the development of metabolic syndrome.

Keywords: cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, Polymorphism
