Background: Chronic kidney disease has been acknowledged as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, constituting the main cause of death in patients suffering from this disease.
Material/Methods: The aim of the study was a retrospective evaluation of early in-hospital mortality in patients hospitalized due to ischemic stroke with and without coexisting chronic kidney disease. The study comprised 220 patients (103 men and 117 women) hospitalized due to recent ischemic stroke. The studied group was differentiated according to the coexistence of chronic kidney disease: Group I – patients hospitalized due to a recent ischemic stroke with coexisting chronic kidney disease (27 subjects – 17 men and 10 women); and Group II — patients hospitalized due to a recent ischemic stroke without chronic kidney disease (193 subjects – 86 men and 107 women).
Results: A statistically significant dependence was demonstrated between the prevalence of chronic kidney disease and death during hospitalization due to a recent ischemic stroke in the whole studied group: chi-square (1) =5.878; p=0.015. Moreover, a statistically significant dependence was observed between the coexistence of type 2 diabetes and early death among women: chi-square (1) =4.631; p=0.031.
Conclusions: Chronic kidney disease is a significant risk factor for early death in patients hospitalized due to ischemic stroke, particularly among women.
