Introduction and Aim of the Study: New guidelines for CPR were introduced in January 2006. The purpose of the study was to check the efficacy of training the nurses of one university hospitalonin-hospital basic CPR. Material and methods: The study was under taken in a group of 86 nurses with various work experience and working in variou sunits. They took partina CPR course (including BLS with AED, ILS and LMA and LT airway management) consisting of two parts: theoretical and practical (12 hrs), based on ERC Guidelines 2005. Nurses’ knowledge of resuscitation was checked after theoretical part, before practical and after the practical part of the course by means of a written test. Their practical skills were estimated on manikins. Results: The results showed that the same questions caused the most problems both before and after the training but total number of mistakes was definitely smaller after the course. Some parts of guidelines were not understood correctly: proportion of chest compressions to ventilation during CPR in a patient with secured airways, sequence of action after recognizing cardiacarrestin-hospital settings, and the supply of oxygen during CPR. Practical skills were estimated as excellent. After short training all nurses inserted LMA or LT correctly. However, number of effective "first attempt insertion" was higher for LT. Conclusions: Our conclusions indicate the need for regular training of employees of hospital in CPR paying more attention to explanation of frequent mistakes. (Clin Exp Med Lett 2007; 48(1):45-48)
