The role of the behaviour Type A in the pathogenesis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

Introduction: Although gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD)can be traced back to the disorders of the gastroesophageal junction, stress, emotions and other relevant psychological factors play an important role in the disease pathogenesis. Aim: Assesment of the incidence of Type A behaviour in patients with GERD as well as its correlation with the manifestation of emotions in patients with reflux disease. Material and methods: We studied 50 patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease and 40 healthy subjects. Type behaviour and control of emotions was assesed using Framingham Type A Behaviour Pattern Measure and Courtland Emotional Control Scale (CECS) validated for Polish population. The assess men to find ividual behaviour considers cognitive elements as well as emotional and motivational elements. Results: The results revealed the significantly higher incidence in Type A behaviour as well as anxiety and depression in patients with GERD compared to the control group. Patients with GERD had also the significant difficulties coping with emotions. High anxiety and depression correlated with high level of Type A behaviour. Conclusions: Those data show that Type A behaviour and emotional problems are important psychological factors HRQL patients with GERD. Analysis of the results gives basis for supposition that psychological therapy; specifically consisting of altering methods used to reveal emotions, can be helpful in the treatment of most patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease.
