BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to acquire information concerning the clinical characteristics, pathological type, and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) of Uyghur lung cancer patients based on a statistical analysis of clinical data for Uyghur lung cancer cases in the Xinjiang area. We also sought to provide strategies and reliable materials for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer in Uyghurs in the Xinjiang area.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Basic information for a total of 254 Uyghur lung cancer patients who visited the hospital for the first time was collected. Statistical analysis was performed on regular data, including the age of disease onset, sex, residence, and other information such as pathological type, staging, and mutation of the EGFR gene.
RESULTS: The median age of the 254 patients was 60 years old with 60.24% males and 39.76% females. The cases from 4 regions to the south of Xinjiang (Turpan area, Kashgar area, Hotan area, and Bayingol Autonomous Prefecture) accounted for 50.06% of the total cases. Among all the pathological types, small cell lung cancer accounted for 26.38% and non-small cell lung cancer occurred in 73.62% of the total cases. The percentage of advanced stage lung cancer was 70.09%. Adenocarcinoma was the major non-small cell lung cancer type, accounting for 40.55% of the total cases. The mutation rate of the EGFR gene in the Uyghur patients was 15.8%.
CONCLUSIONS: The onset features, clinical characteristics, pathological types, and mutations of the EGFR gene in Uyghur lung cancer patients had their own distinctive patterns. This study could provide clinical references for individualized treatment and prognosis for Uyghur lung cancer patients.
