Healing Effect of Calendula Officinalis L. Extract Associated with Ultrasound Therapy on Wounds Induced on the Skin of Rats

Background: Therapeutic ultrasound (TU) accelerates healing, wound contraction, and tissue reepithelialization, improves the organization of the extra-cellular membrane, and reduces the local inflammatory process. Its application can be associated with the topical use of drugs (phonophoresis). The aim of the present study was to assess the performance of pulsed mode TU with a frequency of 3 MHz and an intensity of 0.5 W/cm2, associated with Calendula Officinalis L. 10% gel, in the healing of induced wounds.
Material and Methods: Thirty Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: control group (G1); topical use of calendula (G2); use of TU (G3), and use of TU applied in association with calendula gel (G4). The animals were euthanized 21 days after the injury. Qualitative and quantitative macroscopic and microscopic analysis was carried out.
Results: The microscopic qualitative analysis revealed the most satisfactory healing in G4. No differences were found in the groups in the quantitative analysis in relation to the formation of collagens I and III in the dermis and epidermis.
Conclusions: The most satisfactory healing was found for the association of TU and Calendula officinalis L. 10% gel. However, no significant differences were found in relation to the formation of collagens I and III.
