Intorduction: Chronic diabetes complications are the most important challenges in the modern diabetic care. Considering the fact that in chronic diabetes complications include diabetic nephropathy, with the relevant role of oxidative stress, we aimed to evaluate some parameters of oxidative stress at different stages of diabeticne phropathy. Material and Methods: The study included 51 type 2 diabetesmellitus patients(22 female, 29 male), meanage 61.4±9.9. Mean duration of DM-2 was 16.0±5.1 yrs. Control group included 30 healthy subjects aged 37±8.2. The serum antioxidant capacity was determined with fluorometrical test with ficoerythryne in addition to the activity of SOD-1(EC1.15.1.1), the activity of catalase (EC 1.15.1.1) and the concentration of maloniandialdehyde (MDA) in red blood cells. Results: In every single of the study DM-2 patients, serum antioxidant activity, the low molecular weight antioxidants and SOD and CAT activity was significantly lower of compared with control group (p<0.05), where as the lowest among those were found in patients with diabetic nephropathy. MDA concentration was the highest in patients with diabetic nephropathy (p<0.05). Conclusions: These data imply that the enhanced oxidant stress may hypotheticallycoincide with late diabetic complications. (Clin. Exp. Med. Lett. 2006; 47(3):191-195)
