Serum adiponectin concentrations in male patients attendig outpatient early comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation program

Introduction: Among various beneficial health effects of adiponectin are itsanti atherogenic properties. Remarkablyprotective impact of adiponectin on injured endothelium appears to be among the direct actions of it adipokine. Patients entering early cardiac rehabilitation program obviously suffer endothelium injury, resulting primarily from acute coronarysyndrome and secondary from endovascular or surgical intervention. Aims: The aim of the study was investigation of adiponectin concentrations in male patients attending early rehabilitation program. Material and methods: 30 malepatients admitted to the early outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program were enrolled to the study performed as prospective observation. Serum adiponectin concentrations were determined in venous blood samples obtained from every subject twice on the beginning of the rehabilitation end of the program. Serum adiponectin concentrations were assayed by ELISA method using R&D Quantikine kit. Results: In 30 study subjects before rehabilitation was 724,49±447,01 μg/ dl and 688,74±432,46 μg/dl after 8 weeks of rehabilitation, the difference in the entire group being insignificant. Positive correlation between Adiponectin concentration and subjects age was observed. The increase of adiponectin concentration occurred in 13 subjects and in this subgroup correlations with age, BMI and HDL-cholesterol concentrations were present, in the 17 subjects in whom adiponectin concentration decreased these correlations were absent. Conclusions: Serum adiponectin concentrations are decreased in patients early post cardiac incident. Increase of serum adiponectin concentration in the course of rehabilitation is possible but due to unidentified factor doesn’t occur in all the patients. (Clin Exp Med Lett 2007; 48(4): 219-227)
