Nicotine addiction is a complex, chronic condition with physiological, psychological and behavioural aspects that make smoking cessation extremely difficult. Many smokers are interested in quitting the smoking habit, but only a small part of them use effective smoking cessation aids (SCA) when trying to cease smoking. To support smokers in their attempts to quit, a wide range of SCA is available: pharmacological – nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), bupropion, varenicline, second line and associated therapies, medical (doctor, nurse, dentist), psychological support, telephone, computer based counseling, and more.
