Whole-Body Vibration Training Does Not Modify Anthropometric Parameters and Lower Limb Strength in Elderly People

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a 12-week program of whole body vibration (WBV) training on body composition and lower limb strength in older women.
Material and Methods: Eighteen physically independent older women (over 60 years old) were randomized into 2 groups: untrained (UN, n=9) and whole-body training (WB, n: 9). The workout program (20-min sessions, 3 times per week for 12 weeks) consisted of vibrating platform training (frequency, 30–40 Hz; amplitude, 2–4 mm). Each training session included a 5-min warm-up period on a treadmill; 3 sets of WBV training by isometric squat exercise to 45 s and 3 min of cool-down/relaxation. We evaluated anthropometric parameters and muscle strength by senior test. Statistical analyses between groups were determined by 2-way ANOVA with repeated measures followed by Bonferroni post hoc test. Statistical differences was established at p<.05.
Results: After 12 weeks of platform training, there were no changes (p>.05) between groups in the following parameters: body weight (UN: –0.4±05, WB: –5.5±10%), BMI (UN: –2.5±5, WB: –5.5±12%), and%BF (UN: 2.6±0.2, WB: –2.5±6%). However, lean (UN: –0.2±1.6, WB: 6.2±0.5%), fat (UN: –0.7±2.7, WB: 15±1%), and muscle strength (UN: 0.9±4.9, WB: 7.2±5.5%) presented a variation (change) tendency after platform training period.
Conclusions: The results suggest that 3-month vibration training does not change body composition and muscle strength in older women.
