Instruments Used for Assessment of Static and Dynamic Balance in Stroke Survivors: A Systematic Review

ABSTRACT: The aim of the present study was to perform a systematic review of the literature to clarify what instruments for the assessment of static and dynamic balance have been validated and are the most widely used for stroke survivors. Searches were conducted in 5 databases. The eligibility criteria for the selection of articles were randomized controlled clinical trials published between 2009 and 2014, the main outcome of which was the evaluation of static or dynamic balance in stroke survivors. The methodological quality of the articles was evaluated based on the PEDro evidence scale. Fourteen articles met the eligibility criteria and received a score of 3 or more points on the PEDro scale. The analysis of the articles selected suggests that no assessment tool allows the evaluation of both static and dynamic balance in stroke survivors, and no authors stated what the best assessment tool is. The tools most often used were a stabilimetric evaluation using forces plates, the Berg Balance Scale, the Timed Up-and-Go Test, and the Six-Minute Walk Test.
