BACKGROUND: In this era of widespread use of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, determination of the effect of surgery type for cholelithiasis on the postoperative posture of patients can be useful for planning further procedures (e.g., postoperative rehabilitation). The aim of the study was to compare laparoscopic and open cholecystectomy in terms of their impact on the postoperative posture of treated patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 50 patients who underwent laparoscopic procedure and 50 patients who underwent open cholecystectomy. Body posture was assessed with a diagnostic-measurement apparatus, Posturometr, using a photogrammetric Moiré technique. Out of all 56 investigated parameters, 5 were chosen for further analysis: alpha inclination angle (<α), beta inclination angle (<β), gamma inclination angle (<γ), thoracic kyphosis angle (TKA), and lumbar lordosis angle (LLA).
RESULTS: Patients who underwent open surgery had greater changes in the alpha inclination angle (<α), beta inclination angle (<β), and lumbar lordosis angle (LLA) when compared to patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery. Results indicate that open cholecystectomy poses a more significant burden on the posture of patients.
CONCLUSIONS: The findings also suggests that laparoscopic cholecystectomy is significantly superior to open cholecystectomy, because, apart from a similar therapeutic effect (i.e., removal of the gallbladder), laparoscopy is associated with limited tissue damage, which is reflected by the lower degree of deformities in the postoperative posture of patients.
